The Hive at New Standard Works

the hive building against a deep blue skyhive logo

The Hive is a community hub for Birmingham
We are located in a grade II listed historic building in the historic Jewellery Quarter. You can find us on the ground floor of the New Standard Works building in Vittoria Street. Formerly a jewellery manufactory, today you can eat at an award-winning vegetarian organic café, take part in craft workshops, enjoy exhibitions, events and connect with us in many different ways.

We are socially and environmentally responsible.
We run a vibrant inclusive community makers and heritage programme too, funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

At the Hive we are proud to offer an inclusive and friendly welcome to all our visitors. We are socially enterprising. Groups and organisations regularly book our spaces which enables us to continue offering free and low cost activities.

Winner of a West Midlands Tourism Award 2020 in the category of Ethical, Environmental and Sustainable Tourism.
Winner of a GOLD Visit England Award for Excellence 2020

About New Standard Works:

We share the building with Argent College, a Ruskin Mill Trust specialist educational college for young people aged 16 – 25 with learning differences, which operates from the upper floors; including the roof where you’ll find the UK’s only bio-dynamically farmed rooftop garden. The tradition of craft and making in the building since 1879 continues today; the students are mastering the arts of jewellery, silversmithing, leatherwork, felting, catering, horticulture and candle making.

Until it was bought in 2014 by the sister educational charity Ruskin Mill Land Trust, the derelict Standard Works had been left empty and unused for over 28 years.
The New Standard Works now comprises the Hive (including the café and bakery) and the Argent College.
